BRAAC experts contributed to the conference “Commercial horticulture in Ukraine”

Kyiv, 25 February 2010 – BRAAC experts contributed to the conference “Commercial horticulture in Ukraine” hosted by the Ukrainian Club of Agrarian Business (UCAB). The problems of production, processing and sales of vegetables, fruits and plants in Ukraine were discussed during the conference. The majority of participants stressed that Ukraine has mostly favourable background for the development of the sector.

Oleksandr Sikachyna, BRAAC rural development and agriculture analyst, voiced preliminary assessment of the structure of vegetables’ production in 2009. Whereas production of tomatoes, cucumbers grew, the production of carrot, beet, cabbage and onion decreased by average 20-30%. Combined with storage problems, this may have caused quite high season price growth in Ukraine in early 2010.

Vitaliy Zhygadlo, BRAAC international integration analyst reported on structure of import and export of the horticulture products split by countries and goods classification. The export of vegetables’, fruits and nuts allowed receiving by Ukrainian companies a revenue of more than $ 330 millions in 2009. In the general export the share of these products amounted to less than 4%, which is not adequate to the potential of the sector. Moreover, during the season price growth an increased import of horticulture was noticed. Hence, to cover the import of vegetables and root crops Ukraine has spent around $ 80 millions in 2009.

The presentations “Production of horticulture products in Ukraine in 2009” and “Trends of foreign trade in horticulture in 2009” may only be downloaded in Ukrainian.

Kyiv, 10 March 2011 – There is considerable evidence of a positive mutual relationship between the openness of international trade and economic growth that in turn is necessary to secure a continuous reduction in poverty and the promotion of human development. However, reduced trade barriers and improved access to markets are often insufficient to let countries make use of all the potential advantages of trade liberalisation, says the Report. An important prerequisite consists of the availability of relevant institutions and capacities in these countries that would maximize the advantages of the new business opportunities provided by better access to other countries’ markets, new technologies and resources. The Blue Ribbon Analytical and Advisory Centre (BRAAC) – a project funded by the European Union and co-funded and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme in Ukraine – launched today an extensive assessment of Ukraine’s international trade development needs. The Report titled ‘Aid for Trade Needs Assessment – Ukraine: Trade and Human Development’ has been produced within UNDP regional Aid for Trade project ‘Wider Europe: Aid for Trade for Central Asia, South Caucasus and Western Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)’, financed within the framework of Finland’s Wider Europe Initiative.
